Saturday February 1: Encaustics with Nicole Bauberger Brush, layer, melt, collage, scrape - encaustic painting is based in beeswax so you can sculpt the paint in lots of ways. Instructor Nicole Bauberger has been working with encaustic since the mid-90s and has offered countless workshops. After a brief intro to the medium, participants dive in, experimenting with colour and heat guns. Nicole demonstrates techniques tailored to student interest during the course of the workshop - you can follow along with her or pursue your own experiments. At the end of the class we'll look at what we've made and talk about it together. Encaustic is a challenging medium - easy to make something cool but it's hard to make it do what you want it to. Come with a sense of adventure!
Saturday February 8: Upcycled Jewellery with Lisa Moore Teens – do you want to make your own jewellery? If so, then this workshop is for you! Join artist Lisa Moore in using materials destined for the landfill to upcycle into jewellery or sculptural works of art. Cut rubber innertubes into interesting designs and embellish using beads (you hand make from paper and plastic!) and other items such as tin, feathers, wire, and fabric. You will create unique pieces of art to wear as bracelets, necklaces, or earrings.
Saturday February 15: Willow and Paper Lanterns with Alaena Warner Bring some light into these dark winter days with a lantern made from natural materials. In this workshop students will make a lantern using bamboo, rice paper and local willow. Hand drawn silhouettes may be added for dramatic affect. A battery LED light will be provided but the lantern could be used as a lamp with the addition of a cord.
Saturday February 22: Intro to Sculpture with David Curtis An introduction to a variety of sculpture techniques with self curing clay. Teens will learn the fundamentals of relief, reductive and additive sculpture processes and will complete a variety of small personal sculptures that, once cured, can have various finishes applied to them. Having fun and lots of laughter will be prioritized! David will also be bringing information to share about the foundation year art program at the Yukon School of Visual Arts (YSOVA) in Dawson City.
Saturday March 1 and March 15: Ceramic Gnomes and Mushrooms with Ann Chapman Are you a teen curious about clay and ceramics? You are invited to join instructor Ann Chapman in the studio for an intro to playing with clay! In the first session, teens will learn to wedge, roll, pinch, and connect clay together to make whimsical gnomes and mushrooms. These will be fired in the kiln and ready for the second session, where students will use underglazes to paint and decorate their gnomes and mushrooms. Clear glaze will top it all off. All will then be fired in the kiln again and ready for pick up approximately one week later!
Saturday March 8: Intro to Linocut Printing with Lisa Moore Join artist Lisa Moore in carving lino blocks, which will be used to create one-of-a-kind frameable prints, stamp textiles, and make cards. Teens will learn the tips and tricks of linocut carving and printing and will take home numerous cards, prints, other creations, and their carved lino blocks to continue creating independently!
Saturday March 22 and 29: Learn to Draw Comics with Claire Gallagher Learn to draw comics with Yukon illustrator Claire Gallagher! Over two sessions you’ll learn how to design your own character, and write them into a short comic.
Session 1: March 22, 2025 Learn the principles of Character design, how to draw facial expressions, create unique features, and make someone come alive on paper.
Session 2: March 29, 2025 Now we have our characters, we get to put them in action. Learn how to draw a short comic featuring your new characters! We’ll focus on visual story structure and how to make and convey a short narrative in images.
Saturday April 5: Copper Pendants or Earrings with Glenn Piwowar In this workshop teens will make a simple and beautiful copper pendant or pair of earrings with artist Glenn Piwowar. First, we’ll practice designing, cutting/shaping the material, texturing it, annealing (with a propane torch), learning to “pickle" and clean the workpiece. Next, teens will protect the finish by applying spray fixative. Optionally, teens can embellish their piece with hand-made copper rivets, additional copper elements (including fire patina), copper jump rings, and finish it off with a simple necklace cord or earring hooks.
Saturday April 12: GelliPlate Printing with Kathy Piwowar In this introductory workshop, artist Kathy Piwowar will demonstrate how to use the gelliplate, and all the tips and tricks for success. Teens will use ink and a variety of stencils, texture objects, and vegetation, and will pull multilayer and ghost prints from the plates. Experimentation and exploration will be the focus, and teens will take home a ton of prints and hand made cards!
