With support from the City of Whitehorse Recreation Fund, Arts Underground is excited to offer Teens in the Studio Series! Over 8 Saturdays, we are bringing in fantastic artists to share their skills with participants aged 13-18.

Teens are welcome to sign up for one or all the evenings - see descriptions below! If cost is a barrier, please reach out to programs@artsunderground.ca. We want this to be barrier free for our teen participants.

Saturday February 28: Encaustics with Nicole Bauberger
Brush, layer, melt, collage, scrape - encaustic painting is based in beeswax so you can sculpt the paint in lots of ways. Instructor Nicole Bauberger has been working with encaustic since the mid-90s and has offered countless workshops. After a brief into to the medium, participants dive in, experimenting with colour and heat guns. Nicole demonstrates techniques tailored to students’ interest during the workshop - you can follow along with her or pursue your own experiments. At the end of the class, we'll look at what we've made and talk about it together. Encaustic is a challenging medium - easy to make something cool but it's hard to make it do what you want it to. Come with a sense of adventure!

Saturday March 7: Printmaking – Linocut Patches with Lisa Moore
In this three-hour workshop your teen will create their own fabric patches using linocut printing techniques. They will design their own printing block, carve the design with linocutting tools, and then practice making prints on paper.  One the image is perfected we will use a press to print directly onto fabric to create the patches.

Saturday March 21: Introduction to Drawing Portraits with Sheelah Tolton
In this class students will learn about how to draw the human head and key aspects of capturing likeness. We will talk about the anatomy of the head including typical proportions and relative measurements as well as how to simplify the head and face features into shapes that are easy to understand as they shift orientation in space. We will then practice drawing self-portraits and portraits of other students in the class. These exercises will help students not only draw portraits from life but also create new characters from imagination.

Saturday March 28: Intro to Glass Mosaic with Riley Brennan
Join mosaic artist Riley Brennan for a no-stress workshop creating your own little glass mosaic. In this three-hour class, participants will go home with a finished piece.
Students will learn basic glass nipping, and a fast method for adhering and grouting.

Saturday April 4: Embossed Trinket Box with Lisa Moore
In this workshop, teens will transform a small tin case into a functional piece of art. They can create their own design using textured plates and found objects or choose from one of the stencils provided. They will mark out their design and learn how to emboss recycled tin to create low relief, high relief, rounded relief, piercing and engraving. Then we’ll experiment with a variety of mediums to enhance the texture of the embossing. The embossed tin will be used to decorate a personalized trinket box.

Saturday April 11: Block Printing for Beginners with Marlene Collins
Join us in the studio for an engaging and versatile evening of learning and creating.    At each stage of carving our soft cut lino block and erasers, we will discuss the range of possibilities available to the printmaker.  Cards, art prints, decorative papers, T-shirts and textile products can all be created with stamps and blocks. Try different carving techniques and materials, learn which cutting tools and inks to use, and how to work with them on a variety of papers and materials. Students will leave with their carved blocks and enough newly acquired skills to carry on their printmaking adventures at home!

Saturday April 18: Copper Pendants or Earrings with Glenn Piwowar
In this workshop teens will make a simple and beautiful copper pendant or pair of earrings with artist Glenn Piwowar. First, we’ll practice designing, cutting/shaping the material, texturing it, annealing (with a propane torch), learning to “pickle" and clean the workpiece. Next, teens will protect the finish by applying spray fixative.  Optionally, teens can embellish their piece with hand-made copper rivets, additional copper elements (including fire patina), copper jump rings, and finish it off with a simple necklace cord or earring hooks.
